A useful perennial with many benefits

Valerian is an upright herbaceous perennial that grows up to 1.5m tall with rounded clusters of small pink or white flowers in summer and scented pinnate leaves. Valerian has been used since ancient times as a medicinal herb. Always consult a qualified herbal practitioner before using this plant medicinally or a qualified aromatherapist if using its essential oil, especially if pregnant.

Soil requirement: deep soil, rich in organic matter

Sowing and cultivation: Sow late February onwards in seed trays or pots and only very lightly cover to hide seed. Keep moist and semi-shady.
