Lettuce ‘Baquieu’ is a classic antique crisphead lettuce variety of German origin, first referenced in Vilmorin‑Andrieux’s 1885 Les Plantes Potagères under the name “Erstling” (“the first” in German), reflecting its early maturity, It is famous for being one of the earliest and hardiest lettuces—often used for overwintering crops when sown in late summer. This lettuce forms a small to medium compact head weighing approximately 90 - 120g, with green leaves tinged with red or burgundy, especially around the outer foliage. The inner leaves remain pale‑green. The Lettuce Baquieu has a wonderful crisp and crunchy texture with a mild, pleasant flavor.
