Heirloom tomato from America, 1870's

Amish Paste Tomato is a heirloom from America, 1870's. The origin of this strain is said to be from the Amish communities in Wisconsin but discovered among the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Sweeter than other paste tomatoes, the shape can vary from large plum to tear-drop. Juicy, 225 to 340 g fruits with meaty flesh and very little seeds; wonderful as a tomato sauce, in soups, in salads, for slicing or canning. Amish paste tomato is said to be the ultimate paste tomato and adapts to multiple recipes. This tomato has an excellent flavour. It will need to be grown in a polytunnel in Ireland.

Sowing, growing and cultivation: Start the tomato seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost. Sow 6 mm deep at a 21C soil temperature. Transplant out after last frost. Space 60-90cm apart. Indeterminate.
