Chia are the seeds of Salvia hispanica, a native flowering plant of Mexico. Chia seeds are tiny beige or black seeds resembling sesame seeds and are considered a superfood since they are very rich in fibres and omega 3. The young leaves are also edible and can be eaten raw in salads. Some people use also chia in herbal teas.

Soil requirement: Well draining and rich

Sowing and cultivation: Sow in trays, under a very bright shelter. Cover the seeds very lightly and keep moist. When the plants have 3 to 4 leaves, transplant in pots or in the ground, in well warmed soil, 60 cm in all directions. It is also possible to sow directly in place, in rows spaced 60 cm apart. Thin out to 60 cm on the row.
