Vana Tulsi Holy Basil or tree Basil

The tree basil is a perennial bush basil type that grows up to 5 feet and is native to India and East Africa. It is a wild species brought into cultivation.  The plants are woody-stemmed and actually overwinter indoors more readily than the other tulsi types. The leaves are large, slightly hairy and clove scented when brushed. Ayurvedic texts describe this type of  holy  basil as a pillar of holistic herbal medicine and a goddess incarnated in plant form. It is usually used as a tulsi tea. It remains one of the most cherished plants in India. Always consult a qualified herbal practitioner before using this plant medicinally or a qualified aromatherapist if using its essential oil, especially if pregnant.
