Djena Lee’s Golden Girl heirloom tomato is a large indeterminate tomato variety producing golden orange fruits with a semi-thick skin. The story goes that this heirloom tomato was developed by Djena (pronounced "Zshena") Lee, who was part Native American and the daughter of Minnesota financier Jim Lee. It was grown in the 1920s, given to Reverend Morrow when he was 15, and has been grown by his family since 1929.
Djena's Lee Golden Girl heirloom tomato flavor is delicious with a rich balance of sweetness and tanginess. Flavor is so highly prized that these tomatoes won first place at the Chicago Fair 10 years in a row. We like the flavor and texture of this tomato and indeed we can say the flavor lingers in the mouth for a while after eating it. We grew this tomato both in the polytunnels and outdoors. Surprisingly the tomatoes outdoors performed outstandingly better than the ones indoors. We can only praise this variety for its strength and resilience. Beauty, taste, texture and strength: what more to ask for! Seeds grown and harvested in Cork, Ireland.
