Physalis peruviana is a cape gooseberry variety that is an annual or perennial depending on the region and produces edible, orange berries encapsulated in a papery lantern shaped husk. The berries have a very sweet flavour. Only the berries are edible when ripe.

Soil requirement: well drained and sandy

Sowing and cultivation: Sow seeds barely covered in compost indoors in early to mid spring and keep temperature above 18C. When large enough to handle, plant out after all danger of frost has passed.
