A bicolor Japanese turnip from the 1400's

Hinona Kabu Japanese turnip looks and taste great! Japanese Heirloom from the 1400's that was traditionally used to make sakura zuke or cherry blossom pickle. These Magenta colored turnips are easily seen in the garden, protruding above the soil by a few inches, then turning white, stretching long and elegantly into the ground. Harvest the mild flavor roots at 1- 1½ inches wide and 10-12” long. Beautiful in bunches with spicy, sweet flavor great in salads, pickles or cooked. Caramelize with butter, sugar and soy sauce for a delicious side dish. The edible leaves are also tasty in a salad. Great for autumn and winter planting.

Sowing and cultivation: Sow seeds in spring or late summer/early fall for winter harvest. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Plant every 2 weeks for continuous harvest. Cool temperatures improve the quality and flavor of turnips. Sow 3/5cm apart, thin to 12-15 cm apart.
