‘Krishna tulsi’, also known as Shyama tulsi, ‘dark tulsi’, purple basil leaved tulsi is a variety with dark green/purple foliage and a purple stem. Its name comes from from the color of the Krishna or Shyama God it is associated to.  This tulsi is less bitter than other tulsis and is renowned for its crisp and peppery taste and several medicinal properties. The Krishna tulsi is difficult to find usually and takes a long time to grow so requires patience. It is generally used in ayurvedic medicine for respiratory tract such as throat infections, cold and cough issues and skin issues. Additionally like the other tulsi, it is said to boost the digestion, metabolism and immunity, This tulsi is better consumed as a tea. Always consult a qualified herbalist or medical practitioner before using this herb or its essential oil.
